ooc; Skipping again! xD

bic: "So now that you've actually tried something, I will allow you to leave now," Lotus said, a bit miffed. "I mean, you know that I only have your best interests in heart!"

ooc: Meanwhile here are some new bios! (and please also can we assume the past stuff with all of my characters didn't happen unless we making meta jokes)

Name: Willow Flordescia
Sport: Gymnastics
Grade: Sophomore
History: Willow is a single child. Her parents are both away a lot due to their government jobs, and so she was raised in relative isolation. Her family is quite wealthy, though, and while Willow grew up a bit lonely she was never without anything she wanted or needed.
Personality: Willow is typically more reserved, even judgmental at times. She has more trouble picking up on social cues because of her isolation, and as a result she may lash out. That's fine with Willow, though -- she's more of an introvert than anything. Willow is content to be by herself, and only really feels lonely when others point it out. While she doesn't particularly like the company of others, she doesn't dislike it either. Willow is also very sharp and detail-orientated, and takes great care in her studies and extracurriculars. She has a somewhat formal way of speaking, and doesn't like slang or cussing.
Weapons: Ribbons/balls/sticks ?? (tbh I have no idea, this all things a little paltry compared to guns and stuff xD)
Relationships: Willow has known Tam since sixth grade, and alternates between finding his company amusing/annoying. Despite originally hating how familiar he was with everyone, she is now good friends with him.
Appearance: Medium length brown hair, brown eyes. Slightly above average height (5' 6"?) with a very slim build. Always dresses formally. Presumably Caucasian, might change later.

Name: Tam Pórir
Sport: Badminton
Grade: Sophomore
History: Tam is an exchange student from Iceland. You wouldn't know it, though, since he has little to no accent, as he started learning English from an early age. He has a relatively normal relationship with his parents, who are back in Iceland. His older brother moved to the states a while ago, though, and has had trouble with gangs/drugs. He often has had to come between his parents and his brother, trying to keep the peace. Despite that, he still loves both sides, and his family loves him back.
Personality: Tam is very fun-loving and happy-go-lucky. He likes making jokes and flirting with everyone (as a joke). He takes a lot of things in stride, and loves helping others. Tam never really talks about his own personal life much, preferring to let others steer the conversation. However, while Tam may often act cheerful, oftentimes he has his own problems to worry about. However, he always downsizes his own problems, realizing that for some of his friends he needs to always be happy -- and that's enough to take his mind off some of his own worries, at least for a while. Academic-wise, Tam isn't the best, he struggles in a lot of subjects. He still always tries his best, though. Has no qualms with slang/cussing.
Weapons: Badminton stuff (again, if they're fighting bad guys with guns this is like sending a birdie out to meet a torpedo)
Relationships: Tam has a relatively normal relationship with his brother and parents, but he often has to stand between them.
He's known Willow since sixth grade, and has opted to keep her happy and provide some company, if only to stop everyone else from thinking that she's lonely. (He has also yet to meet the other characters?)
Appearance: Light brown hair, blue eyes. 5' 7" (probably).

Name: Hazel Senreta (took her mother's last name)
Sport: Track and field, cross-country
Grade: Freshman
History: Pretty normal childhood. Friends with Peanut since they were both young, used to live together in Italy. Her family moved away because it was getting tense with the Mob, and Hazel became rather reserved as a result, losing her best friend. This led to her getting a stutter, and then being afraid to talk to others. Other than that she's fairly normal, lives with her parents and her cousin, Peanut, in the suburbs in Cali.
Personality: Hazel is very timid, and doesn't like talking very much due to her stutter. She's not scared of everything like the old Hazel, but she still is scared of talking with others. She prefers to run away from situations rather than face them head on, and finds it extremely hard to form new relationships.
Weapons: nothing lmao
Relationships: Peanut is Hazel's cousin (on her dad's side). Very good friends with Peanut, only person she really feels normal around.
Appearance: Short brown hair, brown eyes. Very short (4' 10").

Name: Percy (Peanut) Parrish
Sport: I guess he likes to do robotics in his spare time (no asthma anymore)
Grade: Junior
History: Mixed heritage (American/Italian). His mother is related to the Mafia, and she and his dad are currently somewhere in Italy. Because of his mother's Mob connections, Peanut was shot several years ago in his chest which is one reason why he's quite weak (finds it hard to breath after periods of activity). After that incident, his parents sent Peanut to the US with his cousin. Does not know how to speak Italian.
Personality: Peanut hates his limitations, although he's almost resigned to it. Has a somewhat nihilistic view on life (not suicidal though), although desperately tries not to show it. Because of this, his sense of humor can be quite dark at times. Despite that, he tries to be nice as he was always taught it was the right thing to do.
Weapons: can probably run five feet before dying
Relationships: Currently staying with cousin Hazel in California. They are very good friends, although sometimes he looks after her like a little sister. Other than that this is his first year at Hyperion, and in California in general. He doesn't know anyone here other than his family.
Appearance: Brown hair, hazel eyes. Below average height (5' 5")

ooc: I am somewhat pleased with these bios now

ooc: very brief bios, I think these cover the basics!

aster - senior:
♂ / ♋︎ / ENTJ / jul 12 / monterey, california / 5'9"
Student body and sports club president at Hyperion. Once a self-effacing bookworm, now he’s very adventurous, gregarious, and ambitious, although his peers definitely have mixed feelings about him and his leadership — and surely, he has “mixed feelings” of his own due to his emotional volatility. Besides being skilled at a fool with a bow and arrow, he’s good at martial arts and cooking. He enjoys jazz music, mol bio, and exploring the outdoors. ...Robin Hood wannabe.
relationships: vera’s roommate, lav’s boyfriend, lotus’s older brother, liviu's half-brother
other: full name aster louis genovese, greek/italian descent, "doyen of archery"

lav - senior:
♀ / ♏︎ / ESTP / nov 14 / dusseldorf, germany / 5'7"
This gal's from Germany and thus has a pretty awesome but unfortunately faded accent. Throughout her life, she’s always aspired to be a heroine figure like her cousin Chartreuse, and though she’s by no means cocky, fear of failure has been a never-ending hindrance — though she always tries to remain ostensibly collected. She enjoys oboe, black forest cake, museums, and a nice night on the town. P.S. She’s also the student body and sports club secretary at Hyperion.
relationships: anise’s roommate, aster’s girlfriend, glaux’s older sister, chartreuse's cousin
other: full name lavender isolde sonnen, german descent, "doyenne of field hockey"

vera - senior:
♂ / ♍︎ / ISFJ / sep 1 / seville, spain / 6'0"
Though he was recruited to Hyperion in part for his biomedical background, he wants to make it clear he’s not a prospective pre-med. Nonetheless, behind his world-acclaimed organic chemistry research and abundance of other achievements, he generally feigns happiness to hide an inner instability. He enjoys romantic dramas, painting, cafe-hopping, and just being better than everyone at everything. He’s also the student body and sports club vice-president.
relationships: aster’s roommate, cuvier’s cousin
other: full name verano tristán rendón, spanish descent, "doyen of chemistry"

anise - senior:
♀ / ♑︎ / INTP / dec 25 / st petersburg, russia / 5'4"
This former mysterious ballerina and transfer student has found her place among friends at Hyperion. For someone who delights so much in napping and unproductivity, she’s independent and driven in achieving her academic and career goals, spending hours in the dance studio daily, but she’s rather quiet and awkward otherwise. She enjoys EDM music, spa nights, and flaunting her meme-making prowess — it's quality comedy, she claims.
relationships: lav’s roommate, liviu's former partner
other: full name anise pinella, transferred to hyperion sophomore fall from kronos (the school liviu goes to), russian descent, "doyenne of ballet"

lotus - junior:
♀ / ♌︎ / ENFP / aug 3 / claremont, california / 5'4"
Let’s just summarize and call her interesting. This martial artist, specializing and literally dominating in taekwondo, has a dedication not to be scoffed at. Feeling pressured to follow in her older brother’s footsteps, she is also conflicted about her own sense of feminism and beauty, which she typically hides with a sort of ebullient yet bizarre boldness. She's a big fan of East Asian culture and food, online shopping, and cooking... let's maybe put cooking in quotation marks.
relationships: minerva’s roommate, glaux’s girlfriend, aster’s younger sister, liviu's half-sister
other: full name lotus adelina genovese, greek/italian descent, "doyenne of taekwondo"

sabs - sophomore:
♀ / ♈︎ / ESTJ / apr 8 / pittsburgh, pennsylvania / 5'5.5"
Fittingly, her name is derived from the "saber" fencing sword and the Latin "bellus" for beautiful, for while she's a pretty young maiden, she's also rather cutting, in every sense of the word. Like anyone else, her older sibling has had some impact on her identity, in particular her chivalry — and her elitist hypocrisy that's about as low-profile as she is. (Wonder what happened.) As well, she enjoys R&B music, variety TV shows, and oversized sweaters.
relationships: niege's roommate, cress's girlfriend, marcel's younger sister
other: full name sabella descoteaux, swiss descent, "doyenne of foil fencing"

niege - sophomore:
♀ / ♎︎ / ESFJ / oct 21 / manchester, new hampshire / 4'10"
Don't mention how she's very short and very young. She doesn't like drinking milk and she skipped grades, capiche? With that said, this precocious snow girl seems to have no weaknesses. Imagining life like a series of balancing scales, she's able to please and excessively roast anyone, sometimes simultaneously, though some say it makes her fake and unapproachable, to her dismay. In any case, she loves sweets, board and card games, and aesthetic stationery.
relationships: sabella's roommate, feura's younger sister
other: full name niege marise corindon, french descent, "doyenne of tennis"

cress - sophomore:
♂ / ♓︎ / INFP / feb 19 / manchester, united kingdom / 5'5.5"
With looks, talent, a charming accent, and royal blood, he was practically born into celebrity, but he's more wary of the limelight now. Even so, the line where his civilities and noble aloofness come from himself versus his background gets blurry. Some wonder what's in that tea of his — is it the source of his scarily spot-on words of wisdom? Inwardly, he's sort of world-weary and often drifts off into dreamland, but if he's not asleep, he enjoys reality TV, giving gifts, and photography.
relationships: sabella's boyfriend
other: full name cress sativia, english descent, "doyen of skiing"

other people i could update later?? or not?
minerva verismo
glaux sonnen
chartreuse kedves
marcel descoteaux
liviu onciul

"Tam [insert last name here]?" the teacher called from the front of the classroom. "It's time for your presentation."

Tam steeled his nerves, trying not to shuffle his papers around as he walked to the front of the classroom, grimacing. Of course, he would be called to present first. First presentation, first bell of the day. Out of all the classes... Tam groaned inwardly. Djöfulsins AP Comp. Djöfulsins summer homework. Djöfulsins presentation.

Well, Tam thought as he put his papers on the podium, shoving his hands into his pockets. He put on his best ****-eating grin. Let's start off the year with a bang.

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls," Tam swept his arm forward in a mock bow. "If you recall, our summer assignment this year was to... make the class laugh. Using a school-appropriate method." Tam gave a quick glance to the teacher, who was growing more wary by the second. "Well, let me assure you that that is what I am here to do today. Just flew in from the coast, and -- " Tam continued to ramble on for a moment, reading numbly off his paper. Wonder why comedians use that joke anyway?

"And, without further ado... " Tam slapped on his grin again, and winked at one of the ladies sitting in the front row. Willow. She looked affronted, but he could see a small smile. Well. That was the only girl in the classroom who he dared wink at anyway -- she would know he wasn't serious, he had flirted with her since they had met in sixth grade.

Tam paused for dramatic effect. He should've invested in a sound person. That Universal sound effect would be really useful right now. Hell, he would even take the Minions version. "I present to you... Tam's guide to flirting."

-----

That was interesting, Willow thought, fighting to keep down a smile. She had known, of course, what Tam's presentation was going to be. She had helped him with it -- last night, of course, right before it was due. He had called her in a panic -- swearing in Icelandic -- nearly blowing out her eardrums.

She scolded him for procrastinating, then offered a couple of ideas. None of which he took, of course -- 'Sorry Wills, but I don't think people are going to laugh if I just tell them to' -- but it had all worked out in the end. She had helped him proofread and edit his presentation, and it was going fairly well at the moment.

Willow sighed and smoothed her skirt before listening to Tam once more. She already knew his presentation by heart, there wasn't much point in listening. She started to idly watch the crowd of students, who all seemed enthralled -- or maybe slightly disturbed -- with Tam's presentation.

Flirting, Willow resisted the urge to laugh again. It was so like him to do that. He never flirted seriously, of course. Which was probably a good thing, as no one ever took him seriously. It was clear that his presentation was somewhat satirical -- who else would compare flirting to jumping into the mouth of an active volcano? -- and the crowd was enjoying it.

I'm sure the class will like my presentation better, though, Willow thought. I've been polishing it up all summer. Even now, the competitive urge was still there -- despite Tam's insistent protests that life wasn't a competition. Just then, Willow, who had been idly twirling her pencil in her hand, dropped it. It rolled underneath someone's desk behind her.

Willow bit back a grimace. How could she have been so clumsy?
"Excuse me," she said in a soft voice. "But could you get my pencil please? It rolled underneath your desk. I'm very sorry for the trouble."

The first day of school is always an exciting one -- at least until the second or third day when the intricacies of a cold and uncaring world envelop you whole, pressures of academic stress drill you to the ground, and doubts of yourself fracture you from within. For now, let's return to the first day.

Sabella's eyes darted up from the texts on her phone towards the self-effacing voice in front of her. She felt a vague sense of relief that she came face-to-face with an ostensibly approachable student. At a small private school like Hyperion, it was expected for everyone to know, or at least recognize every other student to ensure a tightly-woven, questionably happy community. It was just something Pollyannaish that gave the school's administrators a rush. Sabella regarded such expectations with less interest, despite her Hyperion alumnus brother's unyielding pride for everything the school touched. In a matter of seconds, she reached under the desk and returned the lost pencil to its owner, without a second glance.

And her eyes darted straight back to her texts.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"First day of senior year!" Lavender exclaimed, marching into her first class with her head held high, her hair fluttering in the air, and her schoolbooks nowhere to be seen. (Should we also note that her so-called "first class" was the third period of the day?)
Her less enthusiastic friend Anise bit her lip when the duo were received with skeptical glances from their fellow classmates, pulling on Lavender's dress to quiet her down. However, Lavender's solo parade was cut short by the class TA, when the phone in her hands was replaced by a clean lab notebook and syllabus. The TA motioned towards some desks in the lecture hall and watched solemnly as the girls found their way to open seats. Upon getting situated, Lavender turned to Anise and gave her a toothy grin, albeit one without any fragment of joy in it.
"Why the smile? This class is renowned for its insane difficulty," Anise whispered, while trying to jot down the TA's announcements.
"Well... just because it's the end of the beginning," Lavender said, "and it'll be the beginning of a long, sensational end."
"To begin, we have randomized lab groups of four students each. Please check the lists in your syllabi and find the other students," said the TA.
Willow tensed. She had not expected the girl behind her to just be looking at her phone, while Tam presented. Don't these people know how to act politely? she fumed silently. Granted, Tam had called her up at midnight, woken her up and begged for her assistance, but that was Tam. She had gotten used to his antics by now, and well... Willow glanced guiltily at her feet. It had been a rough summer for him. Who was she to begrudge him one favor, when he had helped her out so many times, whenever she had requested it?
And now, I'm doing something for him, Willow thought grimly. Though he had procrastinated, Tam had worked hard on his presentation. Normally, she hated talking to others, but this girl ought to pay more attention to her friend's presentation.
"Excuse me," she began, turning around to face the girl. She looked quickly to ascertain that the teacher wasn't looking their way. "Thank you for picking up my pencil," she said stiffly. "But, please, I would appreciate it greatly if you paid attention to my friend's presentation."
----------
Tam paused in the middle of a spiel, during a particularly animated part. It was hard to roleplay out giving someone a sack of a potatoes, especially, on your own, but these verdamnt presentations were supposed to be solo, so here he was. His eyebrows furrowed as he caught sight of Willow talking to another girl, one sitting behind her. She was wearing a brightly colored orange/red sweater, and holding a neon blue phone. Willow seemed pissed off.
Tam sighed again, and continued to animatedly act out the current scene. He couldn't do much, not when he was supposed to be neck-deep in a pile of potatoes, but he supposed that in the next scene, he might have to ad-lib a little. Wills always did have a temper, he thought gloomily. Wonder what that girl's done to tick her off.
He bit back thoughts of the last time he had to use humor to defuse a situation. That was one reason he started to flirt, and joke around. It was hard to stay mad when someone's in front of you, telling a joke about the bottle of ketchup and martini. If things went south between Wills and the girl, he can pretend it's part of the presentation and simply accept the grade the teacher gives him. After all, these presentations were supposed to be solo.
----------
Peanut frowned as he looked down at his syllabi. Randomized groups, huh. Knowing his luck, he would end up stuck between two rocks and a hard place. "Lavender Sonnen, Anise Pinella, and... Cuvier Aluviese," he muttered quietly. "And, of course, Percy Parrish," Peanut laughed bitterly under his breath, as he shuffled his belongings to his designated lab station.
Percy Parrish, he thought. I've gone all summer without hearing that name. Hazel calls me Peanut. One more 'nut,' and we could form a band. He felt faintly amused by the inane thought. And as someone swept by -- Cuvier? he certainly looked like he was coming to his table -- Peanut felt oddly perturbed. Maybe I just found that last nut, Peanut thought warily.
Despite that, Peanut had no intention of greeting Cuvier unkindly. "Hello there," Peanut smiled and extended a hand. "My name's Peanut -- er, Percy, but all my friends call me Peanut. Don't ask," he gave a short laugh. "You must be Cuvier. It's nice to meet you!"
nut ooc
Confined by the faint ups-and-downs of Tam's presentation, which beared resemblance to every student's bullshitted presentation she had been in attendance for, Sabella nonetheless enjoyed the constancy of the world. To her, the moment was like an Omelas she had no need to walk away from; the suffering child was the outside, especially this brown-haired girl who piqued her with her persistence. Marcel told me that the elitist tendencies at this school were always concentrated most in student interactions. So certainly I would ignore her unless she was a celebrity, Sabella thought to herself, furrowing her brow. She's not. She clicked the off button on her phone.
"Excuse me," she said, imitating Willow's voice. "I respect your values. And I respect the effort that your friend put into this presentation on, what, condiments?" She smiled slightly. "But I'll pass for now. Thanks."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cuvier smirked, his blue eyes reflected by the blinding fluorescent lights above them. He held out his open hand to shake Peanut's -- and with the naturally strong grip he developed in swimming. "Yep, nice to meet you. Where are ya from, Percy? Peanut? What kind of a name is that, huh?"

"Hey now, Cuvier, it's only the first class. Don't scare him yet," said Lavender, now approaching the two male students with her confident, marked strides. Anise trailed behind, her voice however traveling ahead. "No wonder Vera's scared of you," she added. Her typically soft voice possessed a surprising bitterness.

Lavender glanced back just in time to see Anise struggling to fit her papers in a folder and dropping them in the process.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"No, no. Alexander, the math genius. Class of... '14? His brother's here as a freshman. Probably set on being valedictorian too."
"Impressive. Oh, also, do you know if Carme's studying abroad this semester?"
"Carme?! No way! That can't be safe..."
It wasn't ideal for Cress to join senior students for lunch at the extravagant dining hall -- or facility, as it was officially termed -- situated at the northern end of Hyperion Academy's campus. The impression he got from the entire class was one of distrust and false superiority, and he hoped his class wouldn't turn out the same way.
"So, Cress, you've been quiet," said Aster with a smile, one of the aforementioned senior students with great renown on- and off-campus.
"You're right. I have been, because I have noth -- " Cress began to respond, but in that moment he set down a book, subsequently knocking over a cup, filled to the brim with hot green tea.
Willow bristled. The people here really did have no manners! And this part of Tam's presentation focused on pick-up lines (Willow wasn't entirely sure where the potatoes came from), not condiments! She opened her mouth to retort, but all of a sudden, the teacher intervened.
"Is there a problem?" the teacher frowned, and started coming over. Willow inwardly cursed. On the first day, she had gotten in trouble! Willow hesitated. She could have easily told the teacher that the other girl was on her phone during class, but she decided not to. It seemed... wrong, somehow. Although there was certainly no love lost between the two, Willow kept her mouth shut. She could already see Tam had, somehow, miraculously freed himself from the pile of potatoes and was now strutting over.
Willow cursed herself this time. I've done it again, she thought regretfully. She knew that look in Tam's eye. It was the same look he got whenever he flirted with someone to defuse a situation. And now Tam is going to do something stupid to make up for my mistake.
-------------
Cue my stupid decision, Tam thought mournfully. And the presentation was going so well, too.
Tam freed himself from the imaginary pile of potatoes when everyone was distracted by the teacher. Everyone liked drama, especially when it wasn't about them. "There's no problem, Ms. B!" he said chippily. "This is all part of my presentation."
Ms. B stared at a Tam for a long time, then pressed her face into one hand. "Mr. [something], you do know that this was supposed to be a solo presentation... don't you?"
Tam winced as he heard the double meaning. Ms. B was actually giving him a chance. All he had to go was to admit that he knew, it had been a joke or a mistake or something ha ha, everything's fine, he gets an A, but it won't be fine because then Willow would get chewed out and that other girl looks like she means business -- Stop. Calm down, he ordered himself. He breathed in, and out.
....aaand the ****-eating grin's back. Looks like he was going to have to put his flirting skills to action.
"Oh. I'm sorry," Tam began bashfully. "I didn't check... I'm so sorry. But... if it's alright with you, could I please continue? This is a rather vital part of my presentation. I understand that my grade my drop, but I think it would be better overall if I did this part."
Ms. B sighed. "Mr. [something], it's the first day of school. I'm willing to extend a little leniency on this matter. Make sure that this doesn't become a habit," she warned.
"Of course not, Ms. B."
Meanwhile, Willow and the other girl were both staring at him. Willow looked shell-shocked, and... regretful? Ah, that's right. "Ms. B, please, don't dock points from these two, though. This was entirely my idea," Tam said earnestly. Ms. B shook her head at him in response, then grumbled assent. Tam sighed in relief, looking back at Willow.
Hell, she looked even more guilty now. What was up with her? Tam ignored it for now -- he could ask her about it later. Right now, it was time to flirt with a complete stranger. Who probably had no idea what was going on. Oh well, Tam thought grimly. All in a day's work.
-------------
Peanut winced at Cuvier's grip. Christ on a bike, is he trying to crush my hand? Peanut thought irritably. Or, maybe, I'm just a weakling. He is a little rude, though. Gritting his teeth, Peanut responded, "It's just a nickname. Please call me Peanut, all my friends do," he laughed a little bit. At least Hazel did. But then again, she was his only friend here, wasn't she?
Suddenly the two girls swept over -- Lavender and Anise -- Peanut reflected. "It's nice to meet you both, too. Are you... Lavender... or Anise? I'm Peanut, if you didn't catch that. Kind of a weird name, but..." he trailed off as he noticed the other girl trying to stuff papers into her folder.
"Here, let me help," Peanut said kindly, picking up several papers and handing them to her. At least that's one thing I can do properly, Peanut smiled bitterly again. I can't even shake someone else's hand, can I?
-------------
Hazel sat down in the large dining hall, shivering as she put on another sweater. Why was it so cold in here? she thought, teeth chattering. To be honest, she wasn't even sure she was in the right place. This didn't look like the dining hall for freshmen. Hopefully it's not too far, Hazel thought hopefully. After all, didn't cafeterias usually all get grouped together? That's how it had been in Middle School.
Hazel winced as her stomach grumbled loudly. The lunch period was already half over, and she hadn't found the freshman dining hall yet. Maybe the cafeterias are really far apart, she hesitated. She couldn't buy lunch in this dining hall -- she was too scared to try -- weren't seniors and juniors the kings and queens of the school? Who knows what could happen if she was caught here!
But... Hazel looked towards the drinks station. She had enough for a soothing cup of tea, which would surely warm her up. Surely she could buy one cup of tea, then try and find the freshman dining hall? Slowly, she inched up towards the drinks station, money and ID out -- Gahhh!
Hazel hissed in pain. Besides her, a tall upperclassman in a scarf reached out, concerned. He had spilled his tea all over her sweater! Suddenly the heat of the sweater was oppressing, but Hazel couldn't think. She had been noticed! She wasn't where she was supposed to be... her first day was school was unraveling apart. She forced herself to calm down.
"It's -- it's fine," she stuttered out, biting back tears. "It wasn't that hot, I -- I'll just go. I'm sorry. I know I'm not s-supposed to be here. I just g-got lost." And without another word, Hazel scampered off. She needed to find a restroom, she needed to get her sweater off and see the burn. Hazel's ears burned. She was so stupid. She had just blurted out that she wasn't supposed to be there! Now she would get reported, and probably get expelled, and...
"I can't get this stupid sweater off!" she growled. Suddenly, Hazel froze. There was someone in one of the stalls in the restroom.
In all honesty, the latter half of Tam — was that his name? — Tam’s presentation had directed Sabella’s interest away from the gossip in her messages and battles in her mobile games. After all, people likened the competition at Hyperion to a horde of hungry honey badgers killing over food, so a dramatic public scene regarding grades was something to talk about. She was excited to tell her best friend and boyfriend about the happenings from her first day of sophomore year, and to hear them recount their days as well. However, nothing would have prepared her for the finale of Tam’s presentation.
To be quite frank, she could only have described his interactions with her as appalling. And she did. Spiteful curses raced through her mind afterwards, which congealed into spiteful sentences she might be able to report to other students; say, the upperclassmen in the student government. But reminded once again of her brother, she decided it was no big deal, unless Tam himself became a big deal, with whatever talent he may or probably may not have. In reply, she only warned the boy of the future and, as another student began her presentation, returned to her phone.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anise laughed while she returned her papers to their rightful place. Looking over her folder, she thanked Peanut briefly and then stood beside Lavender. She rolled her crimson red eyes at Cuvier.

Why the sass, Anise? Did I offend you?” Cuvier asked defensively. He shrugged. “I’m not surprised.

Just call people by their names, butterfly boy,” she said. Then, raising her hand, she said loudly for the TA to hear, “Haven’t we gotten to know each other now?

The TA frowned. “Tell me everyone’s names and titles, please.

I know myself… there’s Cuvier, doyen of swimming… Lavender, doyenne of field hockey… ” she recited. “And… um…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh my God, what if they sue us? No more endowment. No more anything,” Aster groaned histrionically, looking in the direction in which Hazel ran off.
T-They won’t! I don’t think that girl looks the type to complain to anyone!” said Cress.
"You think? She just ran into the fucking men's restroom."
The faint echo… was a girl’s voice?
Verano had inevitably heard of other antics that the new freshmen had engaged on this first day; to everyone else, they were confused children. While others teased or perhaps denigrated these children, he felt more motivated to befriend and guide them. In spite of that, his first encounter with a member of the new class was rather tricky, to say the least. The petite girl stood petrified, frozen while attempting to undress herself in the middle of the unfamiliar environment — which was the dining hall men’s restroom.
So all he could muster was a hesitant “hi.”
Tam flopped down into his seat gratefully, only too glad that it was over. Sabella? Was that the girl's name? Whatever her name was, she has simply sat there while Tam continued to speak. He had prepared several of his worst best pick up lines for what was supposed to be his show's finale, and in his haste to finish his presentation, had somehow blurted them all at once. The look on her face, though, was almost worth it. Her expression had turned more and more stony by the second. Of course, Tam kept talking -- if it's one thing I'm good at, it's that, he thought wryly.
That was terrible, he sighed. And what did she say at the end?
"Be careful who you talk to like that around here," she had warned. "And don't ever speak to me in such a way again."
Tam blinked. Jeez, talk about an ice queen. At least she hadn't taken his flirts seriously, that could've been even more of a nightmare. And the look on Willow's face when Sabella said that? He thought she was going to jump at her. I'll need to talk to Wills after this is all over, he thought. Usually she's not so... aggressive? She's been acting kind of strange today. I hope everything's all right.
-----------------
Peanut glanced between the two sides -- Cuvier, and Anise and Lavender. Clearly, these three had had some past quarrels with each other. His eyes narrowed as he heard snippets of their conversation -- it seems that his initial impression of Cuvier may have been right after all, then.
Oh dear, Peanut thought sarcastically. First bell in, and I've already made an enemy. And, I'll be stuck working with him all year. Around dangerous chemicals and sharp tools. Peanut resisted the urge to laugh again. This situation... was just so ridiculous. Like something out of a movie, or something. Except his life could never be as exciting as a movie's, of course. Nor did he want it to be.
Heroes always die, Peanut thought somberly. Just then, he noticed that Anise staring at him. Oh, my name!
Peanut put on a smile and introduced himself. "Friends call me Peanut. Kind of a weird nickname, but..." he shrugged, and continued on. "And, um, I guess I'm the doyen of robotics? Not sure what that means..." he murmured the last part.
Just then, he noticed Cuvier staring at him, and the others. There was Anise, the girl with the papers, and her friend Lavender. I'll need to keep an eye on butterfly boy, Peanut thought grimly.
-----------------
Hazel heard the stall down open, she did not expect a boy to walk out. She nearly jumped out of her skin at the unexpected "hi".
No... it couldn't be... could it? Hazel flushed red as she scrambled to cover her mistake. "I--I'm so sorry, I accidentally ran into the wrong restroom. Y-you see, someone spilled tea on me and I w-wanted to see the d-damage and o-oh, I should probably g-get out, shouldn't I?" she babbled, cursing herself.
Stupid, stupid! Hazel ran out once more, and skidded to a stop. Where could the girl's restroom be? she thought frantically. Usually, the girl's restroom was right next to the guys', but nope, not in High School, apparently! Apparently in high school, things were hard to find, and she couldn't even find the freaking lunch room on her first day and...
The burn was getting unbearable, though. Hazel needed to find the restroom -- and she saw it. On the other side of the stupid lunch hall. She was going to have to run for it.
Was this boy’s blasé flirting was a pretense for something less humorous? Who knew what tragedies shaped him into the incubus (ooc: i mean that in both meanings of the word) he was today? He made Sabella wonder whether she should confront him later or let him be.
It was strange to think of a status quo at the colorful, bustling Hyperion Academy, when every day saw news of someone winning some other national competition. But that’s what she heard about the school from beyond; for Sabella, and for everyone else within the golden hell-hole, life was not that predictable. People were not that simple. She felt a personal resentment towards Tam boiling within her, and it bubbled enough to trigger several text messages —
> hey you free to check someone
> yep, don’t have class this period :)
> a student in my class, i think he’s a sophomore
> name’s tam
> found him
> pissing me off ngl, he’s defending a girl by harassing me
> oh nooo, do you know the girl
> no idea
> well don’t worry..
> come see me when you’re free and I’ll send the background check on him now
> check your private e-mail
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yeah,” said Lavender to the TA, who had a thoughtful expression on his face. “That’s our group then. What should we do right now?

Interesting group we have here. Then I hope you’ll all enjoy this course. I’ll gather the class soon to go over lab protocol and our pset and exam schedule. You all might want to exchange contact information before that. Sounds good?” he said, before walking over to another group.

Anise’s ashy blonde hair fell over her face when she looked down at her phone. Lavender poked the small plush animal strapped to the phone, though Anise lightly batted her hand away, apparently to keep its fur clean. She then suggested that they just make a group message to save time, to which Lavender and Cuvier agreed. It could be done in the click of a button, since the trio were already well-acquainted with each other.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cress stood up to put his plates away. “Oh, look at her go. I suppose she realized her mistake,” he said, curiously watching as Hazel darted across the dining hall. “She’s fast.
Yeah, I wonder if she’s also a sports recruit,” Aster murmured, pursing his lips. “I — oh, Vera! You look as if you just saw a ghost.
… um, I wish I had. That girl was in the restroom. She was such a mess,” Verano said unsteadily as he re-joined Cress and the senior students at their table. He didn’t, however, join them in gazing at Hazel’s sprinting; he found it fairly impolite. Angling his face towards Cress, he said more firmly, “She said someone spilled tea on her. And I see you finished drinking yours — or maybe not.
Cress narrowed his eyes. “I was an accident. We offered to help her. From the looks of it, you just made it worse.
"Hey, hey! Don't be blaming each other like that, you guys!" a female senior, Celine, interjected, waving her arms between the two to dispel the tension between them. "Maybe I should go talk to her. She shouldn't be scared of a fellow short girl, right?"
Willow sat numbly through the rest of the presentations, mind whirling. Of course I had to get him involved, she groaned. And I probably got him a failing grade too...
And the girl behind her was still texting. Willow fumed silently. The nerve of her! You'd think after that disaster, she could tear her eyes off her phone for one second.
What concerned Willow the most, however, was the way Tam had stood up for both of him. And the look he gave her after it! Tam never got angry with her -- or anyone, for that matter -- she supposed. But... she had dragged him into this situation. She was such a terrible friend, and yet Tam had still stood up for her.
Even when I try helping him out, it seems to all just go down in flames, Willow mulled over that fact. He's helped me so many times over middle and high school, I just want to do something nice for him, for once.
------------------------
Peanut put his number in as Lavender passed him the phone. He checked the clock absentmindedly -- they still had about a minute or so to go before the TA was going to go over the class's schedule. He doubted that Cuvier was going to do any seriously stupid over the course of the year -- this was an elite high school, after all -- but he certainly seemed like an ******.
Just then, he got a message on his phone. Huh. Hazel. Wasn't she supposed to be lunch right now?
> hey
> can you help me out with something right now?
> sorry
> it's no problem, what's wrong?
> do you need help finding somewhere
> yeah
> the freshman dining hall?
> oh no
> sorry
> I don't know where that is... I just started here, remember?
> oh
> that's okay then
> sorry to trouble you
> aren't you supposed to be eating lunch right now?
> hang on, maybe I ask someone else here
> I can't find the dining hall
> right now I'm at the senior dining hall or something
> maybe junior
> I don't know
> it's okay
> please don't trouble yourself
Peanut's brow furrowed as he read that last text. He knew Hazel would be too timid to ever ask to help from a stranger. Maybe he should go check on her... but he couldn't very well leave during class, could he?
"Hey," Peanut nudged one of the girls -- I think her name's Lavender -- sitting next to him. "Could you cover for me for a moment? I need to go check on my cousin. And, um, you wouldn't happen to know where the Freshman dining hall is, would you?"
------------------------
Hazel finally burst past the doors to the girl's restroom. Mercifully, there was no one else in the place. She all but tore her sweater off and ran her arm under some cold water, sighing in relief. She pulled out her phone for a second, to check the time... and the lunch bell was almost three-quarters over.
Marvelous, Hazel thought bitterly. And I still have yet to find the freshman dining hall. She hesitated for a second. Maybe I can ask Peanut?
She sent him a couple of quick texts, crestfallen as he reminded her at this was his first year here, too. She sent him another series of texts, and shoved her phone back into her bag. She was just getting ready to head out when another girl walked in. She was short, only a few inches taller than Hazel, but she was definitely a senior.
Hazel froze. What am I supposed to do now? she thought despairingly. She wasn't even supposed to be here! What would happen if she was caught?
Sabella’s friends would lovingly tease her about her poor perceptive skills. She recalled times when she was the last person in the room to find out about new relationships that had bloomed. There were also times when she needed to fly internationally to fencing tournaments and would nearly board the wrong plane after a gate change. Oddly enough, she could always sense hostility, and often to an exaggerated degree. She glared at the brown-haired girl sitting stiffly in front of her, and Sabella knew neither of them would forget about the other, despite not knowing so much as the other's name.
She opened the e-mail from her friend concerning Tam.
...
PORIR, TAM
sex: MALE
birthplace: [city], ICELAND
occupation: STUDENT
“Doyen of Badminton,” Hyperion Academy
family consists of living mother and father, older brother
older brother charged with multiple counts of drug possession, associated with [gang name]
other members of [gang name] have been charged for robbery, arson, kidnapping, murder
After perusing the document to that point, she set her phone down, and she did not pick it up again until the class concluded. Although she was not any more attentive to the other students’ presentations, she puzzled over how Tam and the girl in front of her were connected.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Of course, but ‘freshman dining hall?’ I’ve never heard of one,” Lavender said, her voice trailing off.

Anise was equally baffled. “Did they build one? We would’ve heard about it, right?

There’s no freshman dining hall,” Cuvier chimed in, looking straight at Peanut. “Are you a frosh too or just a dumbass? Or both? We just have the Gliese Dining Facility. You know — up north by the running trail.

There’s no need to be rude,” Lavender chided the junior, emphasizing each word individually for clarity. With a sideways glance at Anise, she said, “We’re not all four-year students.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(ooc: hazel freezes so much, she should be niege)
Celine blinked twice at the sight of Hazel, who froze in horror like a deer in the headlights. She gave the freshman a pleasant smile, and advanced just a few steps so as to not frighten her. Her pale skin tinged with tea-rose blush was illuminated by the small white lights in the restroom. In contrast, her dark maroon uniform was obscured by shadow.
You’re a freshman, aren’t you? Welcome to Hyperion,” she said in a soft voice. “I want to apologize for my friends’ idiocy. Hopefully you aren’t injured; if you are, I could walk you over to Health Services.
Class took an eternity to end. Tam's ears were burning over his earlier presentation -- there was no way he was living that one down. The first presentation of the year, on the first day of school.
Although, what did I expect? Tam thought wryly. My presentation was on a guide to flirting. I guess I expected it to go a little more smoothly. Hopefully everyone can tell that I was joking.
Once the bell rang, Tam gathered his belongings and walked over to Willow.
"Class, we will finish the rest of the presentations tomorrow," the teacher called from her desk. "And, will Tam Porir and Sabella Descoteux please stay behind after class?"
Tam's smile froze in place. Great, he lamented. Just what I need. He motioned for Willow to go on to her next class, signaling that he would be fine.
"Go on, Willow. I'll catch up with you later!"
Oddly enough, Willow seemed reluctant to leave. She looked stiffly at the girl behind her, as if she blamed her for today's events, and left. Now, there was just the girl -- Sabella -- and Tam in the classroom. He looked awkwardly at her. He hadn't meant to her dragged into this, either. He had hoped that by taking the blame in the presentation, he could avoid this situation.
Ms. B shuffled her papers on her desk and then walked in front of the two. "Now," she began sternly, "I don't know what's going on between you two, but I'll reminds you two that public displays of affection are prohibited in the student handbook."
Tam felt his face go even redder -- was that even possible? -- as he realized what the teacher meant. He thinks... he thinks Sabella and I are... oh dear. Tam coughed slightly. He needed to clear this verdamnt situation up as soon as possible.
"Oh! Um, Ms. B, we're not really dating. This was all part of the presentation. Again, I take full responsibility for the events that happened today. I should have read the guidelines more carefully. I assure you that this won't become a regular occurrence." Tam fervently hoped that that was enough to get them out of this. He didn't want anyone holding a grudge against him, particularly someone he just met.
The only way this could be worse is if Willow were here, he thought mournfully. Thankfully she wasn't dragged into this as well.
-------------------------------
Peanut flushed slightly at Cuvier's words. "This is my first year here, but I'm a junior," he tried not to snap at the boy. "Anyway, thank you. My cousin will be glad to hear that she's not lost after all." Peanut pulled out his phone again, and told Hazel that she was in the right place. He frowned slightly, waiting for her response. She had probably put her phone away.
A quick glance at the clock revealed that there was still some time left before the TA was going to start. "I'll just go tell her then," he decided. "Could you please cover for me for a moment?" Fortunately, the dining hall wasn't too far away from the classroom. If he hurried, he could probably make it back in time.
Besides, Peanut's mouth quirked slightly. It's not like we're doing anything that important today.
-------------------------------
Hazel bit her lip nervously. Who was this girl? Was she with the other two from earlier? Why was she apologizing when Hazel was in the wrong place? For Pete's sake, she had even gone into the men's restroom. If anyone had seen her...
"N-no, it's n-no problem," Hazel stuttered. "P-please don't t-trouble yourself, I just r-ran some cold w-water over it. I-it's fine." Hazel began slowly backing towards the restroom door. "I-I'm very sorry about all this. I s-should've looked w-where I was going. I-I'll just be leaving, now..."
Before the other girl could react, Hazel darted out the bathroom door. This first day could not have gone any worse, she thought miserably. She had intended to simply fly under the radar and stay out of trouble, and even that had gone wrong.
Sabella warily stared at Tam as he explained the situation, from his perspective and in his bothersome charming manner that reeked of sycophancy. However, she was grateful that he made an effort to get them both out of trouble. She supposed he had some potential that Hyperion was drawn to.
He’s right. There’s nothing going on between us,” she said. “Nothing.” She let out a delicate laugh, attempting to communicate her girlish side to the female teacher. “I-In fact, I’m in a relationship with someone else. Surely you’ve heard the title ‘doyen of skiing.’
Surprisingly -- well, not that surprising to her -- the teacher’s eyes lit up. Sabella suppressed a smug smile, and she silently thanked her brother for making her aware of the elitism rampant in the school administration. “Yes, I have!” said Ms. B, sounding like a young maiden herself. “As I recall, my colleagues throughout the humanities department have talked about him for days… always talking about the wondrous papers he’s written! In that case, there’s no problem at all.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

No problem!” Lavender said, giving Peanut a thumbs-up. “We can come up with an excuse for your absence!

Or we could just be more furtive. So we won’t need to say anything,” proposed Anise, twirling her hair with her finger.

Cuvier exhaled, patently annoyed that Peanut and the two girls continued to prolong such a trivial matter. “Just go. You probably don’t want to come back to this class anyway.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Celine tilted her head, casting a confused look towards the door where Hazel exited. Before following in the freshman’s footsteps, she took a quick glance at the wide bathroom mirror to check her hair. Upon exiting, she immediately ran into Verano, who greeted her with an emerald-colored expression of concern.
What are you doing, Vera?” said Celine, pushing him aside with her arm, in spite of his towering height over her. “She may have gone into the men’s restroom, but you better not be coming in here.
No — I wouldn’t do that! But Piper just suggested that I wait for you here. In case anything serious happened,” he said, gazing at the ground.
Celine raised an eyebrow. “Well, thanks… but now what?
The freshman bumped into me, and —” He pointed behind her. “That’s what.
Tam exhaled in relief as Sabella backed him up. She was already in a relationship with someone else, huh? Not that it concerned him much, but if this 'doyen of skiing' had been in their class, Tam would have had one hell of a time coming to him.
Maybe the people here do take flirting seriously. He had always used it somewhat satirically, so other people could usually tell. This teacher had actually thought he was serious, though! Gosh, I hope I didn't just portray myself as of those guys in front of all my peers, Tam thought anxiously.
Tam's thoughts drifted once more, and he thought himself thinking of the wording Sabella had used -- 'doyen of skiing?' -- why not mention her boyfriend by name? Now that he thought about it, he remembered the admissions officer saying something similar to him once he had been accepted to Hyperion. It sounds kind of like Japanese, or something. Wonder what it means.
After the teacher was finished gushing over the "doyen of skiing," Tam and Sabella were free to go. He lingered outside the classroom for a bit, waiting for Sabella. "Thanks for that," Tam said awkwardly, once she had emerged. "And, um, I'm sorry about all this. I just didn't want you and Wills -- Willow -- to get in trouble our first day. I hope you understand that I wasn't actually serious," he added, almost as an afterthought.
He sighed again. He supposed he should inquire over what Sabella and Willow had been arguing, about, too -- maybe he could clear something up between the two. "If you don't mind me asking, what were you and Willow arguing about?"
------------------------
Peanut smiled gratefully at the trio. "Thank you," he replied before excusing himself, and walking out of the doors. Fortunately, the TA had been looking the other way, telling another pair of students off. Peanut took out a crumpled paper of the map of the school. "A left turn here..." he muttered. "And, just walk straight."
It wasn't long before he arrived at the dining hall, full of students. It's going to be hard spotting Hazel in all of this, he thought. Just then, he saw her run out of the girl's restroom -- and straight into a senior. Another girl quickly followed her, and Peanut hurried over as well.
"Hey, is everything alright?" he called out, concerned.
------------------------
Hazel couldn't believe her luck. She thought she had managed to escape -- I just need to find my next class now -- and then she bumped into the boy from the restroom. She landed on her bottom, and hastily got up.
"I-I'm so sorry!" she squeaked. "I didn't mean to b-bump into y-you." She heard the restroom door open again, and the girl in there came out as well.
I just can't catch a break, can I? Hazel thought mournfully. At this rate, I'll be late for my next class, too...
"Hey! Is everything alright?" No. Not that voice. Hazel looked over, and there, was Peanut. Normally, Hazel would've been happy to see him -- but he was in a class right now, she had probably disturbed him too...
"Peanut?" she called, astonished. "Why are you here?"
"I needed to tell you something. You weren't checking your phone, so..." Peanut trailed off. "Anyway, there's only one dining hall. This is the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior hall."
Hazel nearly screamed in frustration. "That would explain a couple of things..." she mumbled. She looked around -- the boy and the other girl from earlier were still there. This would be awkward to explain.
Sabella’s penetrating gaze flicked upward at the sound of Tam’s voice, or more specifically, the upward inflection that accompanied a question. She stood in silence for a few moments to mentally digest the detail he just gave, that the brown-haired girl was named Willow. Like a weeping willow?
She touched her index finger to her lips. “Oh, I don’t mind. But arguing? I don’t recall more than one or two exchanges with… Willow. She appeared upset with my phone usage.” She motioned towards the closed classroom door and added quietly, “Evidently she was the only one that was upset.” She advanced closer to him so that their faces were within an inch’s distance.
I would be more worried about yourself, not Willow,” she said. “We’re not usually happy with people that harass others.” Although her voice did not falter, she did feel slightly reluctant about threatening a near stranger on the first day of class. But for her, extreme action always prevailed over no action at all. Always?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ooc:  i guess i don’t need to put anything here for now, they’re just in class lol

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The two seniors exchanged glances upon the arrival of the newcomer. Having attended Hyperion for three years, they’d seen their fair share of… well, just about everything. They possessed a general grasp of the situation, despite the incoherent lost-on-the-first-day freshman babbling from Hazel. The newcomer, who had come to her rescue, appeared to be a transfer student; he also appeared more complaisant as a person.
Celine flashed an impatient look at Verano, hoping he would act first. He frowned and caught the transfer student’s attention. “Excuse me. Peanut, was it?” He looked to Celine for validation, but she crossed her arms and simply waited for him to continue speaking. “Is this your first day here?
"Oh," Tam sighed again. He should've figured it was something like that. He opened his mouth to explain to Sabella about Willow's situation, but she had moved closer, and was... warning him again? Or was that a threat? He supposed that he should be bothered, but at the moment he couldn't bring himself to care, though he did feel slightly perturbed. In his freshman year, no one had taken his flirts quite so seriously -- or in this case, stonily.
He shifted his position so that they weren't as close to each other. "Again, I really am sorry about that," he said apologetically. "I didn't mean to harass you. It was honestly a joke," Tam paused for a moment. "I mean, why else would I present a guide on flirting, the first day of school?"
He ran one hand through his hair nervously. "And, I didn't really want Willow or you to get into a confrontation with the teacher. But," Tam held both hands up, palms facing Sabella in a sign of surrender. "I understand your point. Won't happen again, miss."
Tam had heard the teacher call Sabella's name when she had been walking over, yet he still felt slightly hesitant over using it. Normally, when confronted, he could flirt or talk his way out of it -- yet Sabella had made it clear that she wouldn't tolerate anything of the sort. He wasn't sure they were really ready for first-name basis yet.
"Well then," Tam shifted position once more, looking awkwardly at Sabella. "I guess we should get going to our next classes. Um... I suppose I'll be seeing you around. Have a nice day," he said as he turned around, slipping his hands into his pockets once more. Only once he was several yards away did he realize that he had forgotten to talk about Willow with Sabella.
I can do that next time, or something, he assured himself. For now, he needed to hightail it on to AP Biology. He didn't want to piss off two teachers in two classes.
-------------------------------------
Peanut was momentarily startled. "Uh, yes! My nickname is Peanut. This is my first year at Hyperion, I transferred from a different school. Hazel here is my cousin," he explained. "What about you guys?" he asked, extending one hand for a handshake.
Peanut glanced over at Hazel for a moment, noting that she was now gone. He sighed. She is far too timid, he thought, resisting the urge to put his face in one hand. Just then, Peanut saw the time on the clock. "Oh! I have to get back to class," he told the two seniors. "I just came here to talk to Hazel for a bit. Um... I'll catch your names later. See you around!"
Wish Hazel had stayed long enough so I could at least have given her the map, Peanut thought as he entered the science classroom once more. His thoughts wandered off for a moment. She ran away pretty quickly, he reflected. I might be able to get her to join the track team. She's quite fast, especially for someone so small.
Peanut's mouth quirked bitterly again as he closed the door, fervently hoping that no one had noticed his absence. At least one of us can run.
The soi-disant Hyperion senior squad put away their plates and glasses, cleaning up nicely in preparation for them to travel in a pack to their independent work seminar, a seniors-only course required for graduation that the underclassmen simultaneously dreaded and respected deeply. Cress observed the seniors chattering, all agog to go to the campus conference center; although he was friends with them all, he was still the odd one out. These people before me… are the best of the senior class, he thought to himself. They’re at the top of the world.
Cress,” he heard someone say behind him, snapping him out of his musing. He spun around to face Aster…’s phone? He skimmed the messages displayed on the screen.
The blonde-haired senior beamed broadly. “Don’t forget. It’ll be fun. I’ll send another reminder later!” He gave Cress’s shoulder a friendly tap before weaving his way back into the other students’ conversations.
Cress decided he would find his own “squad” of sorts for the time being. (ooc: he'll just go find sabella somewhere)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Niege! Hey, Niege!"

That high-pitched, expressive, almost fiery voice was one of Lotus Genovese’s many idiosyncrasies. Despite her aversion to science courses, she happily skipped into the biology classroom, making an entrance as grand as — actually, to her dismay, her older brother’s influence. She discovered that she could barely go a few hours without someone mentioning his name, or worse, comparing him to her. Luckily, to Lotus, the AP Biology class gave the impression of a safe haven. Her brother had tested out of the entire biology sequence for fun and never touched a class as “plebeian” as AP Biology.

And for the target of her resonant voice: Niege. Owing to her small stature and legitimately young age, she would constantly be bombarded with bothersome questions: if she was a student, how she got in, how she was so young, occasionally an actually respectful inquiry. After a year, these interrogations have mostly subsided.  With the time to focus on her studies and activities like a normal student, she has inspired her fellow classmates and faculty with precocious ingenuity in every aspect of her life.

Even though the girls sometimes clashed like fire and ice, in general they’re more likely to be a dual force not to be reckoned with.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the conclusion of class, Lavender and Anise approached Peanut, who they noticed had sidled over to a seat at the back of the classroom upon his return.
I’ll send notes from what you missed,” Anise promptly said, nodding her head.
On the other hand, Lavender had more to say than her dainty counterpart, per usual. “Well, Anise and I have got time before our next class. But I’m interested in… you know, whatever’s going on in your life. I think I’d find out regardless of if you tell me, so I’d suggest that you spill the beans.
Pulling on Lavender’s summer dress, Anise said, “Speaking of beans, we need to eat, Lav."
Lavender pouted. “I’ve got to watch my weight though… remember the plans that Aster made in the group message? So. Much. Food.” She then gave a sheepish smile to Peanut, awaiting his reply.
Thankfully, no one had noticed him return to class. The rest of class was fairly uneventful -- just some note-taking. They wouldn't even take their first quiz until the after the Labor Day weekend. As the bell rang, Peanut noticed Anise and Lavender coming over.
“I’ll send notes from what you missed,” Anise had said. Peanut nodded gratefully, although he wasn't too sure what he could have missed. He was only gone for a little while, after all.
Well, it'll give me a chance to compare notes with someone else, he reflected. And then, it's not like I have anything better to do than study, right?
Lavender's next words, however, were a little more interesting -- albeit surprising.
"You want to know about me?" Peanut jerked his head back a little in surprise. "Um... there's not much to tell. I transferred to Hyperion this year. Just now, I helped my cousin find her way around the school a little bit. That's why I wanted to know where the dining hall was," he explained.
"Sorry, were you expecting something a little more interesting?" Peanut teased, although his heart wasn't in it. There really is not too much to my life, Peanut thought somberly. I hardly even know anyone here, other than Hazel. All I do is stay cooped up all day, tinkering with metal... his thoughts trailed off, and Peanut brought himself back to reality. Not that you really want excitement, he told himself harshly. Isn't that what you got you here in the first place? Isn't that why you can't do anything meaningful with your life, anymore?
----------------------------------
By the time Tam had made it to the fourth floor, he was exhausted. Wow, I need to get in shape, he almost laughed. Thankfully, badminton doesn't start until later this month... he was almost at the AP Biology room until he noticed a flyer lying on the floor. Huh. A sports club...? That sounded interesting. Like most freshmen, Tam had been a little apprehensive of joining many clubs his freshman year. He had joined a few along with Willow, and most of them had ended up as disasters.
In my defense, who knew you weren't supposed to squeeze that tight? Tam thought back to the Triple Point lab of his Chemistry Club. In an attempt to observe the Triple Point of dry ice, Tam had increased the pressure too much, causing the bulb to explode. The president of the club looked as if he were about to burst out laughing, but the teacher had been less than pleased.
Tam tucked away the flyer for later. A sports club certainly sounded interesting. And if he played his cards right, he could even get Willow to join.
----------------------------------
Willow sat nervously in the AP Biology classroom, waiting for Tam to arrive. As usual, she sat at a table alone, tucked away from most of her peers. She didn't mind being alone. She did mind the looks people gave her, which ranged from pity to scorn. It's not that I don't have anyone to sit with, Willow thought crossly. I just like sitting alone! Everyone else is far too noisy, anyway.
Willow watched absentmindedly as a girl with a flower in her hair darted across the room to her friend. She never really understood why people sought out friends. She had always been fine alone, hadn't she?
Except for now, I guess. Willow looked anxiously towards the door again. It bothered her a little bit, but Tam had really grown on her through the years. Like a strange fungus, she mused. But while she groaned every time he flirted or tried to cheer her up with a bad pun, Willow had grown to enjoy his companionship. Especially in times like these.
----------------------------------
Hazel felt terrible. In the midst of everything, before even she knew what was happening, she had just run away. She had just left her cousin there, the only person in the world who she could talk to normally. He'll understand, right? she thought anxiously. I just... couldn't.
Normally, Hazel preferred little to no interaction at all with other people. It wasn't that she hated everyone -- she just hated talking to them. Hazel hated her stutter, her nervousness -- it made communicating so much harder than it needed to be. At least I hadn't been in the wrong place after all? she thought hopefully. Like that does my any good now. Hazel's stomach rumbled, and she crossed both arms over it in an attempt to keep silent as she made her way to her next class.
As she darted through the hallways, though, she bumped into someone -- and nearly wilted. Can't I go for one minute without causing some sort of trouble? Hazel thought furiously. The other girl, who was wearing an orange and red sweater, stared at Hazel for a moment as she stammered out some sort of apology. "I-I'm so s-sorry, I d-didn't mean to b-bump into you."
Anise watched as Lavender absorbed the information silently, her eyes fixed on Peanut. As a side note, it was quite fascinating to watch her move her eyebrows and inflate her cheeks as she pondered something, of which physics usually had some relation to. Finally, she answered him, “It’s no surprise you find it uninteresting. But I appreciate you giving me a response, and I think everything that’s happened in this class period has revealed a lot about you.” She winked and then informed him that she had to run to her next class. She clasped Anise’s hand and the two proceeded to dash out of the building. Anise ran across the stone-paved path alongside Lavender like a Maltese trying to keep up with a German Leonberger. Eventually, they entered a spacious conference room and were immediately received by their fellow classmates with cheerful recognition  — in the form of shouting and yelling, of course.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Lotus and Niege remained interlocked in a tender hug for quite a while. After all, the two had not seen each other since the past academic year and were brimming with tens of hundreds of stories about their respective summers. The teacher appeared to be a bit late; on the first day, no less. In the meanwhile, the girls were grateful for the extra free time and began chatting about all they did over break.

In the end — or rather, at the start — when the teacher entered the classroom, he apologized profusely for his tardiness, albeit while repressing a smile. “I’m sorry, I was discussing some news with another teacher here. Guess it got me a little worked up. In fact,” he said, as he pointed directly at Lotus, “You’re Aster Genovese’s sister, aren’t you?

Lotus gulped. She subconsciously sat up straighter and gave him a nervous squeal of affirmation.

His eyes glowed with enthusiasm. “Man, am I excited for this class.” He then raised his voice for the whole class to hear. “Anyhow, welcome to AP Bio, everyone! I’ll pass out the syllabi now.

Niege turned to Lotus with a mischievous grin, but seeing Lotus’s expression, she quickly turned back in the other direction.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sabella shook her head and managed a genuinely amiable smile for the small freshman.   She hoped she hadn’t frightened the girl. “No need to apologize. We shouldn’t be taking up this much space when we walk,” she said. She cast a sidelong glance at Cress — but he apparently didn’t get the message, so she pulled him from the center of the hallway.
Are you lost?” Cress asked.
Peanut pondered what Lavender had said, and found that the information actually worried him a little. Sure, he may act a certain way, but... if anyone were to really know what he were thinking... I guess I just am really transparent, huh? Peanut smiled bitterly as he gathered up his papers. Then again, he probably wasn't an unusual case. Hell, you look up the word "nihilistic" on Google, and the first example that comes up is a teenager.
Everyone has their own problems, Peanut thought somberly. I'm not exactly special.
He rose and left the empty room. Everyone else had left when the three were talking.
And I'll never amount to anything, either.
--------------------------
Willow continued watching the two girls as they hugged, and she found herself frowning slightly. They look happy, she reflected. That wasn't loneliness, was it? She thought in surprise. She had never felt lonely before, but now, she found herself longing for companionship. I wish Tam would get here soon, she sighed. But then again, wasn't it her fault she had made him late?
Just then, Tam burst through the doors -- right after the teacher. Willow sat shock upright. Oh, if only he had gotten here a little bit earlier! She felt guiltier than ever as she watched Tam try and explain to teacher why he was late. Thankfully, it seemed as though he was being let off the hook easily.
Tam exhaled gustily as he sank into the chair beside Willow. "I lost track of how many staircases I climbed getting here," he wheezed.
"Four," she answered absentmindedly. Willow felt even guiltier than before. He hadn't actually overexerted himself getting here, had he? The climb was nothing given the usual 5, 6 minutes they had in between classes, but in the minute and a half he had dashed up here? For a very brief second, Willow considered reprimanding him on not conditioning himself over the summer. Badminton tryouts started out soon, didn't they? She quashed the rogue thought instantly. He wouldn't be in this position if it weren't for her mistake.
Tam suddenly reached for his bag, which he had thrown haphazardly on the table. He pulled out a piece of crumpled piece of paper. Willow counted at least three different footprints on it. "That's not our... our summer homework, is it?" she asked hesitantly.
Tam barked out a laugh suddenly, startling her. "No, Wills. Haha, you're so funny sometimes!" Well. That was odd. Willow hadn't been trying to be funny.
"No, this is the flyer for a sports club," Tam's eyes shined. Willow hadn't seen him so animated since... well, since yesterday, when he told her that he was going to try and win a box of marshmallow-only Lucky Charms. A sports club, though? Normally Willow wouldn't be caught dead sitting at the jocks table. She shuddered at the thought. Since when did comparing torn ACLs and broken bones seem like a fun past-time?
"It seems pretty fun," Tam continued on. "I mean, I play badminton, you do gymnastics, right?" Willow numbly nodded in agreement, still not entirely sure why he wanted to join. "I know the vice president, too. He's also the president of the Chemistry Club."
"Oh," Willow replied. "Will he... recognize you?"
Tam suddenly flushed a bright red. "I hope not," he muttered. "It's not like I'll be bringing that up any time soon. Anyway,
I think we should join."
Willow raised an eyebrow at him. "You really think it'll be worth our time?"
Tam cheerfully nudged her with his elbow. "Can't hurt to see, right?" he challenged. "They're holding an introductory meeting after school today. I'll be going, and it's not like you have anything better to do, right?" Tam regretted the words as soon as he spoke them. They seemed so callous once they were out in the open. "Oops, I didn't mean --" he started to apologize.
Willow seemed lost in thought, though. She hadn't really heard what he had said. "Hm. Well, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to see what the fuss is all about," she replied. Inwardly, Tam cheered.
"Yes! It'll be fun, Wills. And if it isn't, what's the worse that could happen?" Tam shrugged. Willow murmured her assent, as they both settled in for what promised to be a very boring hour of biology.
--------------------------
"Oh. O-oh no, p-please don't a-apologize. I should have b-been more careful," Hazel stared at her feet, hating her voice. Her stupid stutter. She was just about to run off again when the boy next to her spoke, and -- oh no.
"Oh, it's you!" Hazel blurted out. Wasn't Hyperion supposed to a larger high school? It had several buildings, surely she couldn't be unlucky as to run into the same person twice?
Hazel began to stutter again in her fear. "U-um. Sorry a-about earlier. N-no, I'm not lost. I'm just t-trying to get to my n-next class," she squeaked. "I s-should get going." And, before she lost her nerve, Hazel made an attempt to say at least one more word. "Have a n-nice day," she mumbled awkwardly, preparing to dash off once more.
Sabella wondered where the freshman's apology was coming from, but she decided she could talk to Cress about it later. He certainly would concur, viewing this present moment as crucial. Cress raised his hand to grab Hazel's attention.
"Before you go, can I just ask, just out of respect," he said, "based on the way you ran in the dining hall... perchance are you an athlete? A sports recruit?"
It was only when he spoke that Sabella realized the import of the situation. With the impending graduation of the sports club's current seniors, it was up to the rest of the executive board to draw in new members.
So she joined in, "There's a sports club here at Hyperion. Everyone's welcome to the club; we hold a bunch of events throughout the year and it's a fun, diverse group. If you're interested, we're having our introductory meeting this afternoon -- with food from [cafes off-campus]." She ran over to a chartreuse-colored flyer hanging on the other side of the hallway, ripping it off the wall and handing it to Hazel. "Even if you aren't an athlete, we'd love to have you!"
Re: avria and espeon 1x1
Hazel bit her lip nervously. She had been trying not to run so fast -- running in schools was frowned upon, after all. "Yes, I a-am," she stuttered out. "I do... t-track and field. And cross c-country. U-um... p-please don't t-tell anybody I was r-running in school."
The offer of a sports club didn't sound too tempting. Hazel avoided people in general, and sitting in a room with thirty other people did not appeal to her. I can't be rude, though she thought gloomily, reaching out and taking the flyer.
"I... I don't do so well w-with others. I don't t-think I'd b-be a very good a-addition to the club," Hazel admitted, hanging her head shamefully. Despite not having had a real friend, other than Peanut, for years, Hazel still knew that the more friends you had, the better off you were. "B-but!" Hazel said in what she hoped was a brighter tone. "I can s-show this flyer around, i-if you'd like. M-my friend might b-be interested." Truthfully, Hazel knew she wasn't going to show the flyer around. She could barely hold a conversation, how was she going to recruit people? She would show the flyer to Peanut, go home, and simply pretend like this awful day hadn't happened.
--------------------------
After the bell rang, signaling the end for AP Biology, Tam was only too relieved. At least it went better than verdammt AP Comp, he reflected wryly. It was rather boring, to be honest. They hadn't done much other than go over the general structure of the class and what to expect on the AP exam. Willow had, of course, diligently taken notes on everything the teacher had said. Tam wasn't sure why. It was all on the syllabus, wasn't it?
"Come on, let's go," he called, lingering by the doorway. Willow was still putting her things in her bag.
Willow tucked a loose strand of her behind her ear as she finished. "I will join you momentarily," she replied, checking to make sure everything was there once more.
The walk to the classroom was fairly uneventful. Tam had accidentally gone off in the wrong direction twice, and Willow patiently corrected him. "How do you know this?" he asked, somewhat enviously. He wouldn't have been surprised if Willow memorized a layout of the school. He had only bothered to look at the buildings he had classes in.
Willow smiled faintly. "There are plenty of school maps around," she chided him. "Here -- " Willow paused for a moment as she withdrew a paper from a side pouch. "There's one for you."
Tam shook his head and continued walking. Before he could ask her why she was carrying around a surplus of maps, they had arrived at the door. He heard faint cheering inside, and wiggled his eyebrows at Willow. "It sounds like they're having fun." Willow looked affronted.
"They sound disruptive," she said disapprovingly. Tam opened the door like a butler and did a little mock bow, sweeping his arm forward for her to go. Willow sighed as she walked in, but he could see her smiling faintly.
--------------------------
Peanut frowned as his phone pinged. He hadn't expected Hazel to text him. He looked at the flyer Hazel had sent him -- of a sports club. He sighed as he read her explanation. "Maybe I am obvious," he muttered, barking out a short laugh. Hazel had explained that someone had seen her running, and tried to recruit her for a sports club. She didn't particularly want to go, but she had hoped that Peanut might.
"You're new here, this could be a good chance to make some new friends," her text had read. Peanut considered it for a moment. He wasn't opposed to the idea of making friends, he just had to make sure none of them... he had to make sure that he didn't reveal too much about of his past around them. His mother's side of the family was involved in some rather illicit operations, after all.
He considered denying Hazel's offer, until he saw the officers' listed on the flyer. Lavender Sonnen... Peanut's brow furrowed as he thought. Her earlier words had unnerved him a little -- how did she know about him? He had to make sure. Peanut typed a response to Hazel, telling her that she ought to be there with him. He felt a faint twinge of guilt as he clicked send. If he asked, Hazel would accompany him. He hated dragging her there like this, but he did not want to be alone at that meeting. A sports club? Peanut felt vaguely amused. I can barely run five feet without collapsing. But... still. I need to find out how much she knows.
Oh my God, Lav! Laaaav!
Holy shit, Rose! And is that Kaisa? Vera, it’s Kaisa! Come here, you two!
Yo, Haru — so nice to see another winter athlete! Help yourself to the cream puffs and boba!
Some had qualms about the apparent fetish that the entirety of Hyperion Academy had with rankings and designation. From the minute a student stepped foot on campus, and given the developing high-tech world, probably even before that, they were their title. If they did not accept this “renaming,” then it was fine, since everyone else in the world would do it for them. Moreover, the systematic ostentation seeped into student activities, to such an extent that the school administration “secretly” ranked the thirty-some student clubs; however these secret placements were conspicuous if you just took a second’s glance at the clubs’ fundings, or rather the disparity thereof. The Sports Club was consistently crème de la crème (ooc: is that why they have cream puffs? who knows), alongside other large and wild groups like the Symphony Orchestra and the Dance Company. That these groups were superior at Hyperion, a fine flower in itself, gave them great influence that even students at other schools admired.
Sabella leaned against the wall at the back of the room that the club had reserved for this meeting. Like anyone else, she was happy to have reunited with her friends after break, especially the seniors, but her joy was ephemeral. While the others actively mingled with old general members and new recruits, she sensed that every individual in the room had some artificial mien about them. How many of these people can you all consider your friends? What are you all so cautious about that you can’t show your true colors? she thought wearily while sipping boba. Suddenly, she spotted Tam and Willow at the entrance and bared her teeth.
Sabs, what’s up?” Niege said, wandering over to her friend with a fresh plate of cream puffs.
It’s them,” said Sabella, her stare fixated on her AP Comp acquaintances.
"Ah, you said you didn't know the girl earlier. I've seen her. Willow Flordescia."
"Niege, didn't you literally search up everyone in our year before we even started school?"
